Beyond the Beyond: Unlocking the Mind’s Eye — A Closer Look at Remote Viewing, Part 1

In the last Beyond the Beyond, we explored the beginnings of remote viewing—the practice of perceiving or gathering information about a distant or unseen target through extrasensory perception (ESP), without the use of the traditional five senses. Remote viewing began to become more refined in the 1980s and ’90s, when it shifted from being primarily a military tool to more of an intelligence initiative. The U.S. government expressed long-term interest, with documents like the Stargate Report, which concluded that although the programs had limited results, they also produced tangible ones.
By the time of the Stargate Report’s publication in 1995, the program had accumulated a huge body of data which had never before been seen by the public. This information included hundreds of remote viewing experiments conducted by notable psychics like Ingo Swann, Pat Price, and Joseph McMoneagle.
Some of the more notable experiments are as follows:
At one point in the program, viewers were instructed to try and find Soviet spies residing in America. One viewer described an individual who had been living in the U.S. for quite some time. They detailed the spy’s location, activities, and even appearance, which led to a near-identical match—and the arrest of a working Soviet operative.
Future viewing sessions were fair game as well. Over the years, many viewers attempted to perceive nuclear accidents, military conflicts, and terrorist attacks. One such session involved a viewer predicting a type of attack in the Middle East. They gave a time, place, and even the method of attack. Some have inferred that what was actually predicted was the 1983 Beirut bombings, a devastating terrorist event in which a truck bomb exploded in the U.S. Marine barracks, killing 241 American military personnel among others.
During a session in 1973, Ingo Swann was tasked with viewing the dark side of the moon. At that time, the Apollo missions had sent manned spacecraft to the moon, but they had not explored the far side of it. What surprised everyone involved was that Swann did not see a barren, lifeless place. Instead, he described machinery, artificial objects, and structures—suggesting that some extraterrestrial race might have been visiting.

He saw pyramids, domes, and other geometric objects that appeared to be made of metal. There were artificial lights, and, according to Swann, he saw naked, humanoid beings performing mining operations. They were tall, with smooth, featureless skin. Most startling of all was that these beings appeared to be aware of his presence—something he sensed intuitively, which gave him the impression they too possessed psychic abilities.
This wasn’t the only strange anomaly seen while remote viewing an alien world. Remote viewer Joseph McMoneagle—one of the most well-known participants in the program—was reportedly tasked with exploring a target on Mars. The difference between Swann’s moon experience and his, however, was that McMoneagle claimed to have taken a deep dive into Mars’ past. He described vast and complex archaeological structures, working factory-like facilities, and, like Swann described, humanoid beings. These entities were thin and appeared to be composed entirely of light, lacking physical bodies. McMoneagle also described a sense of non-hostility while observing them. Of note, he claimed to have witnessed the destruction of Mars by some cataclysmic event.

Did the Stargate Project reveal the untapped potential of human perception—or was it a failed attempt to best the Soviets using pseudo-science and runaway imagination? Maybe there is some kind of hidden ability buried in our consciousness. Maybe the boundaries of reality are more permeable than we’ve been led to believe. This wasn’t some year-long experiment, but a decades-spanning program that gathered a vast body of data—some of which defies easy explanation. While skeptics dismiss it as a misguided venture, those who were involved—and the intriguing results they documented—may suggest otherwise.
