Mammoth High School Celebrates Student-Created Mural and Student Talent

Community celebration highlighted student art, live music, cheer and culinary arts

MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. – Students, families, educators and community members gathered at Mammoth High School on August 25 to celebrate the completion of a new student-created mural and recognize the young artists who helped bring it to life.

The celebration marked the completion of the Student Mural Mentorship Project, led by the Mono County Office of Education in partnership with Mammoth Unified School District and local artist Dave Titus. Mammoth High School student apprentices worked alongside Titus from design through installation. MCOE coordinated the project and provided materials, Mammoth High School provided the mural space, and Titus volunteered his time and expertise to mentor the students.

During the program, student artists signed the completed mural and received certificates recognizing their contributions. The event included remarks from Mammoth High School Principal Dr. Guillermo Muñoz, Brooke Rogers of the Mono Arts Council, Mono County Superintendent of Schools Tammy Bennett Nguyen and Titus.

The Mammoth High School cheer squad joined the celebration, student musicians coordinated by Mike Hammers performed live music, and Culinary Arts students led by Stacey Slichta prepared and served refreshments. Their participation made the event a broader showcase of student talent and school spirit.

The completed mural features Mammoth Huskies set against a colorful Eastern Sierra landscape. For the student apprentices, it was important that the huskies represent students as they progress through Mammoth’s elementary, middle and high schools, building on their education and experiences here before venturing into the wider world. Created collaboratively with Titus, the mural reflects pride in students’ Mammoth roots and confidence in where their education may take them.

Titus has contributed hundreds of volunteer hours to local schools and youth programs during nearly three decades of community involvement. He currently serves on the Mono County Board of Education and continues to support the development of arts education throughout the community.
