Jury Finds Brian Stange Guilty of First-Degree Murder in 2024 Bishop Killing

BISHOP, Calif. — A jury has found Brian Russell Stange guilty of first-degree murder in the 2024 shooting death of Bishop resident David Miller.

The jury also found true the special circumstance allegation that Stange committed the murder by lying in wait, along with three firearm enhancements.

Stange was also found guilty of felony stalking.

Miller, 57, was found suffering from a gunshot wound near his residence on Shepard Lane in Bishop on February 12, 2024. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stange, then 52 and also a Bishop resident, was arrested 10 days later on February 22, 2024, following an investigation involving the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office, Inyo County District Attorney’s Office, Bishop Police Department, and other law enforcement agencies.

The firearm findings involve allegations that Stange personally used a firearm, personally and intentionally discharged a firearm, and personally and intentionally discharged a firearm causing death.

Stange had been ordered to stand trial following a preliminary hearing in April 2024. Jurors began deliberating in the case following closing arguments in late August 2026.

Sentencing will be passed at a later date. The collective charges Stange was found guilty of carry a potential for multiple life sentences.

Update: Stange will be sentenced on November 13.
