Prop 50 Passes; Inyo and Mono Counties Split
California’s redistricting Proposition 50 passed with strong approval state-wide. But true to form, the Eastern Sierra counties, Inyo and Mono, split. One notable difference: the Inyo turnout was stronger than Mono by roughly 10 percent.
The goal of Governor Gavin Newsom’s plan, to compensate for a blatantly pro-Republican redistricting effort in Texas, was achieved. Newsom was never shy about the intention of Proposition 50: add five Democrat-leaning districts to level out the five newly formed GOP-leaning Texas Congressional districts in future national elections.
Here are the preliminary numbers.
Inyo turned out in larger numbers with 64.52-percent of registered voters. Of those 64.52 percent, 3,348 or 48.08 percent voted for the Proposition, 3,615 or 41.92 percent voting against, representing a slim margin of approval.
On the other hand, Mono County voters turned out in lower numbers, just over half of those registered, or 55.56 percent. The gap between approval or not, however, was larger: 58 percent voted for approval, 41.68 percent against.
The state-wide gap was significantly wider with 64.5 percent voting yes and 35.5 percent voting no.
For his efforts, Gov. Newsom now rates an insulting nickname from President Donald Trump.

The Biden administration sued Texas and this is why there was redistricting, I wish people would learn the facts. Prop 50 is illegal..,
This vote wasn’t about representing the people or communities of our state, it was about fighting Trump. One side may think they won, but in reality, it’s a loss for everyone. The liberal majority has effectively silenced the voices of red leaning communities. Those voices were already outnumbered, and this is yet another blow to meaningful representation.
It feels as though our elected officials are now treated like players on a sports team. They no longer represent the people who voted for them, they represent the “team.” And like loyal fans, their supporters cheer them on no matter what, win or lose.
We vote in our districts to send representatives who will stand up for our views. Sadly, politics has lost its way, and both sides, red and blue share the blame.
