Lakes Basin Closed for Storm Activity
To provide for public safety due to storm activity, the Inyo National Forest closed the Lakes Basin area on Thursday, November 14 and will reopen the road if weather conditions permit. The road closure applies to wheeled, motorized vehicles and will be closed at both the Lake Mary and Old Mammoth Road gates. Roads will remain open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
U.S. 395 Near Mammoth Lakes Renamed Dave McCoy Memorial Highway
A section of U.S. 395 in Mono County has been renamed the Dave McCoy Memorial Highway. McCoy was the founder of Mammoth Mountain and worked tirelessly to build the mountain into a world-famous destination and the community of Mammoth Lakes that serves as the backbone of Mono County’s economy. After selling Mammoth Mountain in 2005, McCoy remained in his Eastern Sierra hometown of Bishop with his wife Roma, where he died in 2020 at the age of 104. In May 2023, the Inyo County Board of Supervisors approved a Resolution in support of renaming this portion of U.S. 395 after McCoy. Following that resolution, California State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 102, which passed by unanimous vote on June 20, 2024.
Sherwin Meadows Trailhead Construction Update and Storm Closure of Sherwin Creek Road
With both winter and summer recreational use rising in the Sherwins, the Town and Mammoth Lakes Recreation are implementing improvements in the area to help protect resources and provide an enhanced user experience. The creation of the new and improved Sherwin Meadows Trailhead is underway and will provide infrastructure for recreationists and their four-legged friends. Restrooms, trash facilities, a bike tool station, interpretive and wayfinding signage, a bear box, a poo fairy station, and an avalanche beacon checker will all be available. The Sherwin Meadows Trailhead will be open year-round, except during heavy snowstorms, when the newly-installed winter gate on Sherwin Creek Road, just past Sierra Meadows Ranch, will be closed. The gate will remain closed until Sherwin Creek Road and the Trailhead can safely be plowed. This area is a narrow road with no turnaround with substantial snowdrifts. 2-3 hours prior to the start of a storm event, Sherwin Creek Road and the Trailhead will be swept to ensure vehicles have exited the area prior to the gate closure. Any unattended vehicles will be instructed to call MLPD if they are locked behind the gate or can exit Sherwin Creek Road to U.S. 395 if that road is passable. Once the snow is removed from the road and parking area, the road will be reopened. If substantial snow is forecast for multiple days, the gate could close several times, or remain closed, depending on conditions. The Town closely coordinates the closure of the road and delivery of propane. If the gate is closed, please do not park along Sherwin Creek Road or in the Sierra Meadows Ranch parking lot, unless you are a guest.
