I lived in Vegas for fifteen years and was a bartender for a nice chunk of them. Over that time, we hosted probably five hundred live concerts, with two to three bands a night. One of the mainstays in the Las Vegas music scene was a group called The Polar Bear MCs. They were comprised of D-Mize & Dee Rockz (aka Jewish Dave), whose real name is David Rosen. That was a long time ago, and Rosen has gone on to do some other things since.

Born in Brooklyn and living in Vegas, Rosen is a film composer and has scored countless movies. After his rap projects, Dave’s creative focus shifted toward instrumental and cinematic music inspired by film and video game scores. His work can be heard in feature films, games, commercials, and television placements, often specializing in dark, atmospheric, and dramatic styles.

Released in 2013, “Echoes in the Dark” was Rosen’s instrumental debut and received widespread praise throughout the valley and beyond, with its music videos earning award recognition. He went on to release multiple albums and develop ambitious visual projects, including early virtual reality music videos highlighted by Google and Forbes.

Rosen is also the son of Rich Rosen, owner of the world-famous Wax Trax Records in Las Vegas. Known for its extensive inventory across a wide range of genres, Wax Trax is a staple for Las Vegas music lovers and is frequented by local DJs, vinyl enthusiasts, and even big-name celebrities like Elton John. This year, David took over as general manager for the store and has been spending a great deal of time renovating the building and updating stock.

But music isn’t his only passion. In recent years, he’s been running the “Piecing It Together” podcast, now available on Eastern Sierra Now’s YouTube channel. Instead of a traditional movie review pod, the emphasis is on how films are constructed. Why did the director make the decisions they made? What other films influenced the one being discussed? Each episode takes a single film and traces its lineage, often revealing connections listeners may not have noticed on first viewing.

Rosen and company look at tone, atmosphere, music, and more, and we here at Eastern Sierra Now are happy to host episodes each week. For longtime film fans or casual viewers, “Piecing It Together” has a little something for everyone. It’s rooted in the idea that films don’t just come from nowhere—they’re carefully crafted and assembled, piece by piece.
