May can be an unpredictable month here along the Eastern Sierra but we’ve been lucky to have such a nice opener to the coming year.

The Tri-County Fairgrounds in Bishop are hosting the annual Mule Days Celebration again this week and the weather is looking fantastic, managing to avoid that typical late May freeze that can sometimes hit the event.

Snow is melting incredibly fast, which is good for fisherman headed to Mammoth Lakes and hikers looking to put some miles down wherever they are so inclined.

McGee Creek is already mostly melted out up to about 9,000 ft and the log crossing is clear but with a steep snow bank on the far side you’ll just have to be a little careful with.

Plenty of raging melt winding its way down through the canyon but also plenty of calm spots to let the dogs jump in, cool off, and rehydrate.

The aspens are just barely starting to bud around 8,400 ft but things are mostly green and there is little doubt the wildflower blooms are more than a week or two away.

Even if hiking isn’t to your liking, the McGee Creek Pack Station may have ended their winter offerings but horseback rides will be open for the coming season starting June 7th!

I can’t recommend this gem highly enough, as someone who has long enjoyed every opportunity there is up, up, and over through McGee Creek Canyon.
