March Showers Bring April, May & June Flowers – Get Ready For The Bloom!
If you’ve been hiding under a rock or maybe climbing one, the Eastern Sierra has had a massive winter. A record amount of snow has fallen on the mountains with Mammoth Mountain reporting a record snowpack of 695 inches at Main Lodge. And at lower elevations in places like Owens Valley, there has been plenty of rain as well. This is all setting up for what could be a great year for the wildflowers.
Check Conditions Prior To Heading Into The Big Backyard
The warmer temperatures and longer days have each and every one of us excited to head outside but we ask you to recreate responsibly. The onslaught of winter storms has wreaked havoc on our roads and landscape. Some folks are ignoring road closures and driving through vegetation to get around obstacles and flooded sections which will take the community even longer to re-open the roads. We urge you to respect any closures and stay on the road. Our website has great links to current road, water and fishing conditions.
Prepare For The Bloom
In every spring, the wildflower bloom for Bishop and its big backyard is spectacular. Like a good classical composition, it starts quietly in the lowest elevations of Owens Valley in the early spring, getting louder as the season wanes and reaching a climax in the upper elevations as late as June or July. The question is will this spring be a “Super Bloom?” The definition for a super bloom is when a massive number of different plants, in some cases as many as 200 different species, bloom all at once.
Will It Be Super?
Right now, we’ve gotten the first important ingredient – lots of winter rain. The question is will the other factors align? It needs to be warm, but not scorching hot. Too hot and it will dry out the seeds. In addition, the region can’t have too many dry windy days. Just like our skin, winds will dehydrate the seed coats. Regardless if it aligns or not for a super bloom, we can tell you that it will be spectacular as it always is. For up-to-date wildflower information, please visit our homepage.
