Town Council Adopts Updated Snow Management Policy
As you might imagine, snow management in a town like Mammoth Lakes is no small undertaking. Precise coordination, reliable crews and a solid plan are all needed to clear roadways, sidewalks and multi-use paths after winter storms.
Recently the Town updated its snow management policy to reflect the changes that have occurred in our community since the plan was last updated in 2006. Infrastructure (and the amount of available snow storage space) and staffing play huge roles in the efficiency of the snow removal process. With 120 lane miles of roads and 7.4 miles of sidewalk to manage, snow operators have their work cut out for them after every storm. They follow a specific plan and road clearing order based on the severity of the storm. Public safety and support for emergency services are always set as top priorities. Each snow event is categorized as either Typical Operations, Reduced or Significantly Delayed Operations or Emergency Operations. While most snow events fall into the first category, there are times when snowfall exceeds the ability of the Town crews to successfully perform typical operations throughout town and adjustments must be made for categories two and three. The goal of the Snow Management Policy is to provide the safest possible movement of vehicle and pedestrian traffic throughout the community during winter months and intense storm periods.
