Social Spotlight, Be Backcountry Aware!

As we mentioned earlier in the season being snow smart doesn’t always just apply to Town boundaries. The recent wild weather plus the warming trend in the forecast for the next few days means that backcountry travel should be planned carefully. Recent observations from Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center have shown that avalanche activity and free-moving water in the snowpack indicate that the stability picture has changed significantly. ESAC recommends that if you decide to venture outside, you should create travel plans that account for high levels of uncertainty and allow for large safety margins. If your plans take you to an area that looks overcrowded with little to no parking options, please do not create your own parking spot. Re-evaluate and consider another location. Please follow Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center [https://www.esavalanche.org/] for the latest observations and forecasts.

MLPD Seeks Public Review and Comment on State of California Off Highway Motor Vehicle Grant

The Mammoth Lakes Police Department invites the public to comment on its preliminary application to the State of California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle (OHMVR) Division for the 2026 Grant Cycle (operational period of 2027). The Department’s application was submitted to the state today and the public review and comment period for the grant begins on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, and ends on May 4, 2026, at 5:00pm. Grant funds will be used to reimburse Officers’ OHV/OSV (over snow vehicle) patrol time plus administrative costs, to cover storage area fees, purchase a Toyota 4Runner to conduct OHV law enforcement patrols, and to cover some costs associated with patrols such as a daily use fee for the Polaris RZR plus fuel and maintenance expenses for the RZR and Ski-Doo snowmobiles. The public may view and comment by visiting the State Grants and Cooperative Agreements Program website at https://ohv.parks.ca.gov, click on “Grants”, and select “Public Review Instructions”.
