Inyo National Forest to hold community meeting on October 23 regarding Starlite fuel reduction project

Specifically for the community of Starlite, this meeting is also open to the public

Bishop, Calif., October 19, 2024— Inyo National Forest personnel will hold an informational meeting October 23 at 6:00 p.m. at Cerro Coso Community College regarding an ongoing hazardous vegetation and fuels reduction project surrounding the community of Starlite, just west of Bishop, California.

This meeting is also open to the public for those who are interested in the Starlite Fuelbreak project, implemented under the authority of the Bishop Creek and Pine Creek Fuels Reduction Project to create defensible space on federal lands using mastication and mowing equipment around the community of Starlite.

Approximately 8 acres were completed this past Spring 2024 on the northern side of the community, and up to another 45 acres is targeted around Starlite for this winter and into the next couple seasons.

“We have adjusted portions of the project this year for plant and animal considerations,” said Jeff Karl, a fuels management specialist and lead for the Starlite Fuelbreak. “In order to ensure the fuelbreak is effective we are planning to further treat areas on all sides of the community.”

Location: Cerro Coso Community College, 4090 W Line St, Bishop, CA

Date and time: Wednesday, October 23, 2024 from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

That’s great that the Starlite residents are getting this fuel reduction project. Especially when you consider that they don’t pay for any fire services at all. Our property taxes only go towards fire prevention if we’re covered by a Fire District. The Starlite residents refuse to join the Rural Fire District, and so they don’t actually pay *any* of their property taxes towards fire services. But I’d be willing to bet they would be inflamed if the fire department didn’t show up to put fires out in their neighborhood.
