Cerro Coso Community College Expands Tuition-Free Noncredit Programs to Support Local Workforce and Lifelong Learners
By Nicole Griffin, Dean of Career Technical Education at Cerro Coso Community College
Cerro Coso Community College has recently expanded its tuition-free noncredit programs designed to help residents gain new skills, explore career pathways, and access educational opportunities without financial barriers.
Noncredit programs are zero-tuition, zero-unit courses that focus on practical training, job readiness, and personal enrichment. They require no prior college experience, do not affect a student’s GPA, and serve as a welcoming entry point for adult learners across the region.
Our noncredit programs remove traditional barriers and open the door for anyone in the community to learn, grow, and build new career opportunities. This is education that meets people where they are —no-cost, flexible, and aligned with real workforce needs.
This year, Cerro Coso launched a noncredit Commercial Truck Driving (CDL) program to directly address one of the region’s most urgent occupational needs. According to the South Central Valley/Southern Mother Lode labor market report, the region sees approximately 4,468 annual job openings for truck and bus driving positions —far more than the current training pipeline can support. Most existing supply comes from private training programs, which are often costly and have long waitlists. Recognizing this critical need, Cerro Coso Community College aims to provide an accessible, tuition-free entry point for preparing new drivers and helping close the region’s undersupply of 3,458 workers. The CDL program is not only tuition-free, but also leads directly to high-demand, high-wage careers. For many in our rural communities, this program can be truly life-changing.
Cerro Coso also offers a rich selection of noncredit art and music courses, including drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, orchestra, concert band, and choir, providing the community with an accessible way to explore creativity and the arts. The hands-on studio courses offer dedicated workspace, instructor guidance, and community engagement without the cost of traditional classes.
Beyond the arts and CDL training, Cerro Coso offers a broad selection of noncredit programs designed for both career advancement and personal development, including:
- Computer Basics
- Microsoft Office Skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- English as a Second Language for the Workforce
- Family Childcare Provider Training
- Forklift Certification
- GED Preparation
- Introduction to Public Health
These short-term programs provide practical, hands-on training, preparing students for employment or helping them build confidence as they explore new fields.
Enrollment is simple: prospective students can complete the Noncredit Application through CCCApply and register for upcoming classes via Cerro Coso’s class schedule. No transcripts, placement tests, or prior experience are required.
Cerro Coso Community College remains committed to expanding educational access and strengthening the local workforce, continuing to serve as a vital engine of opportunity, growth, and economic mobility.
