In the quaint ski town of Mammoth Lakes, where the mountains seem to protect the town from the outside world, a group of activists is trying to give their small town a big voice. Coalition Mammoth, a recently formed activism group, has been reaching out to the community and offering an outlet for people to get together and to share their voice.

“Being here in Mammoth, it can be hard seeing things on social media, like people in LA or bigger places getting involved and being able to be part of a larger movement. And we didn’t see any of that going on here in Mammoth, and we wanted to find ways for other people to get involved,” says Skylar Low.

Low and three others—Eva Bissonette, Emily Markstein, and Cassidy Moyer—got together over their passion for activism and started Coalition Mammoth in April 2025. Since then, they have been working together to spread word of their group and get more people from the community involved. “We were talking about wanting to go to a women’s march or go to protests. And we were thinking about driving down south to go to one, and then we were like, we should just have one here and get people to get out and talk about what they’re passionate about here,” Bissonette said.

Mammoth Lakes offers lots of opportunities for recreation: whether that’s skiing, hiking, or mountain biking, there are many different ways to get outdoors. Markstein believes that although it’s beautiful there, it’s easy to ignore what’s happening in the outside world. “It’s an amazing place,” Markstein says. “It’s easy to hide here from the world. You know, it’s easy to go into the mountains and be like, oh, I’m not being affected.”

Because of this, the group figured that a perfect way to get people from the community involved is to host events like Bike Nights, Yoga in the Park, and even trivia at the local Mammoth Brewing. By hosting these events they are offering an outlet for members of the community to come together and recreate and hang out, while also focusing on activism. “I want anybody to feel like they’re welcome to come to one of our events,” Low says. “Our bike nights are like, bring your kids, bring your partner, bring your mom.”

Even though their town is small, Coalition Mammoth hopes to see their group grow and enrich the community that they live in. “I hope to see that there are more people, a more diverse range of people, who get involved with this organization, with this community throughout age ranges, throughout ethnicities and backgrounds, so that we can connect people to the community and to things that they’re passionate about,” Low says.
