Bishop, CA – [January 7, 2026] – Join us for the opening reception of A Beat of Silence on Saturday, January 10, 2026 from 4 to 7 PM at C5 Studios Community Art Center featuring the work of 28 artists. The show will run through February 14, 2026.

A Beat of Silence serves as a counterpoint to the first exhibition in the “This is Temporary” series, The Urgency of Now. While the first show focused on the energy of the present, the second shifts focus to the space between moments, highlighting the temporary nature of stillness, equipose, and reflection.

Co-Executive Directors Erin Dews and Naomi Hart Johson founded C5 Studios Community Art Center in the fall of 2019 in Bishop, California. C5 is a creative hub that aims to be an inspirational home for creative practice and culture, bringing a vibrant, contemporary arts experience to the region, bringing together artists of all ages and invites all members of the community to come and create.

“A Beat of Silence” showcases a diverse range of artistic expressions, including interactive installations, poetry, sculpture, dance and sound that invite audiences to pause and reconsider what we can see vs what’s being shown.

Exploring the visual rhythm of silence, Steve White’s kinetic sculpture Tempus Absurdum uses clock motors to measure the endless passage of time, creating a “beat” of anticipation as the hands converge without ever telling the hour. The theme of non-verbal communication continues with Paige Lary and Hailee Auckee’s untitled work spells “Silence” in American Sign Language, challenging viewers to step out of the daily chaos and engage with the visual depth of the language. Daniel Feldman’s Kicking the Can Down the Road: The Impact of Colonialism on the Owens Valley Soundscape, 1870-2026, juxtaposes the acoustics of the living land against the historical noise of colonialism in the Owens Valley. Grounding the exhibition in the body, Kendall Tani’s Sit With Me combines spoken word and Butoh-inspired movement to navigate the isolating liminality of chronic illness, leaving behind an interactive installation of two chairs that invites visitors to confront sitting with empty space.
