Beyond the Beyond: Folded Between Worlds – The Solway Spaceman Photograph

In northwestern England on May 23, 1964, a 44-year-old firefighter named Jim Templeton took his wife Anne and two children on a picnic to Burgh Marsh, an open and beautiful piece of land overlooking the Solway Firth, the tidal estuary on the border of England and Scotland. The family enjoyed food and the view, and Jim, an amateur photographer, snapped several shots with a Pentacon camera loaded with color Kodak film. Elizabeth, his youngest daughter, sat in the grass for a few of the photos while her father took photos of her. There was nothing out of the ordinary about the day, and the family went home, had dinner, and went to bed.

The next day, Jim took the film in to be processed, and when the photos came back, one picture stood out from the rest. It was one of the photos of Elizabeth, and behind her appeared to be a tall humanoid in what appeared to be some type of space suit. It’s hard to tell if he is turning away or looking directly at the camera, but there is someone there.

Templeton brought the photo to the local police, who forwarded the photo to Kodak. Their experts analyzed the photo and found no evidence of tampering. Who was this person standing behind her? Did he or she appear for a split second before disappearing into another dimension? Did the camera capture something it shouldn’t have? Maybe a visitor, half in and half out of this world? Was it a hoax?

With no double exposure or optical trickery, Kodak offered a reward to anyone who could prove the image was fake. Local newspapers soon caught wind of the incident, and then national ones. The BBC ran a feature on the photo, and it even made it to Time magazine across the pond.

Weeks later, Templeton claimed to have been visited by two men identifying themselves as government agents and wearing black suits. Though they refused to show credentials, he begrudgingly attempted to answer their questions. What time did the event happen? What direction was he facing when the photo was taken? They drove him to the exact location in a black, unmarked car. They pressed him more, but when he told them he had no information, they looked at each other, got back in their car, and left him standing alone in the marsh.

Around the same time, at a Blue Streak missile test site in Australia, two figures resembling spacemen were seen on the test range, which resulted in the test being aborted. Templeton later stated that one of the men working at the site contacted him and said that the being witnessed in the photo looked identical to the ones seen at the test site. What’s stranger still is that those particular missiles being tested in Australia were produced in England, close to Carlisle, which is not far from the location where the photo was taken. Extraterrestrial activity on or around missile testing sites is no new thing. See below:

Some have explained the incident away as an optical illusion. Others say the figure is simply the mother, caught walking away in the background, her hair creating the image of a helmet or visor. Whatever it was, Jim Templeton maintained his story that he hadn’t tampered with the photo until his death in 2011. Maybe the Solway Spaceman can remind us that the ordinary and the extraordinary can collide in a single, fleeting moment—sometimes captured on film for the whole world to see.
