City of Bishop Partners with Various Organizations to Bring Back Family Fun Day as ‘Dia del Niño (Kid’s Day), a Family Fun Day’ to Bishop City Park on May 3rd 

Family Fun Day, an activities-and-services-filled celebration of local families and kids, is  returning to Bishop following a years-long hiatus; but it is coming back with a nod to the  multicultural nature of our community as an English/Spanish bilingual outreach event  called “Día del Niño (Kid’s Day), a Family Fun Day.”

Hosted by the City of Bishop in partnership with nonprofit Sierra Forever and other  organizations, agencies and local businesses, the free event will take place from 9 a.m. till  noon on Saturday, May 3, at the east end of Bishop City Park, across the street from the  Bishop Senior Center.

The public can expect:

• Informational booths, games and activities;
• The California Highway Patrol’s popular Bicycle Rodeo, where kids—who are  encouraged to bring their bikes and helmets—will be able to get tips on safe  riding;
• Assistance in signing up for City of Bishop summer camps, and swimming  lessons at the city pool;
• Wildfire preparedness incentives such as green waste coupons and helpful  resources;
• Health, wildlife, and fire safety information and presentations;
• Free sports gear and educational toy giveaways;
• Music; food; and more!

The City’s Community Services Clerk, Karey Poole, who is organizing the event, said,  “I’m excited to see Family Fun Day revived after it was interrupted by COVID, and to  coordinate it alongside with Día del Niño or Kid’s Day.” Many countries around the  world have a designated “Children’s Day,” and in Mexico, that day is April 30, which is  close enough to Family Fun Day to combine the two, Poole said.

“This is an opportunity to celebrate children by bringing together organizations and  agencies providing valuable services and/or resources to children and their families,  regardless of their race or ethnicity,” said Bishop City Councilman Jose Garcia. “Since  kid’s day is celebrated around the world, it just makes perfect sense to bring back and  rebrand the former Family Fun Day.”

A multicultural kids-and-families day is great for getting important information out to the  community in English and Spanish because there are plenty of children and Latinos in the  Eastern Sierra, said Sierra Forever’s Outreach Director Louis Medina.

According to the latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau’s website, census.gov:

• In Bishop, 12 percent of residents are under 18, and 30 percent of residents are  Hispanic or Latino.
• In Mammoth Lakes, roughly 21 percent are under 18, and 28 percent are Hispanic  or Latino.
• In Inyo County those figures are 20 percent and 25 percent; and
• In Mono County, 17 percent and 27 percent, respectively.

Día del Niño will also feature the distribution of important information and showcase  brief presentations on health and safety issues of concern that have figured prominently  in the headlines lately, Medina said:

• Hantavirus Prevention literature in English and Spanish from Northern Inyo  Healthcare District;
• A Bear Awareness and Safety Presentation at 10:30 a.m. from Sierra Forever; and
• A Wildfire Safety and Home Hardening Presentation at 11:30 a.m. from Wildbark  Institute as part of its Wildfire Resilience Month outreach efforts throughout May.

“Local Hispanic families need life-saving information delivered to them in a way they  can understand,” Medina said. “Providing this information during a fun, engaging event  like Día del Niño will hopefully help them remember what they learned, take home  brochures and other important safety reminders, and become more health-and-safety conscious, no matter their age.”
