To those who have visited before, it is no surprise to hear that Laws Railroad Museum is a unique investment in historical preservation.

From a beautiful array of different tones of glass previously used in a number of functions, a recreation of an old-timey barber and dentist’s office, a fire engine, mining equipment, and of course plenty of history surrounding railroads with examples, you can not only see but also be able to jump right into.

Multiple times a year that history comes to life with the running of one of only five Brill cars of a certain vintage still in working order, allowing folks of all ages a change to experience this early marvel of engineering.

The term Brill car is in reference to the J.G. Brill Company who originally produced these self-propelled railcars, also referred to as “Doodlebugs.”

Our local gem is the Death Valley Brill Car #5 with history from an Inyo County tourist venture around the Death Valley area to a mining operation in New Mexico.

Eventually it reached retirement age after years of work and was abandoned until being rescued and restored by Laws Railroad Museum.

I myself always take friends coming to visit to a few amazing places we have here from wilderness zones to historic sites, Laws being high on that priority list. It’s a wonderful destination for people of all ages and this event is no exception.

If you can, I urge you to take the time to check out one of these events happening over the course of the year. It’s an excellent opportunity to picnic and relax in the shade while checking out a vast offering of fascinating and unusual pieces of history.
