Support Transitional Housing in Bishop
On Monday, December 8 at 6:00 PM there will be a presentation to the Bishop City Council regarding a Transitional Housing Project on Elm Street in Bishop. It would be wonderful if we could get some of us to speak in favor of the proposal. Below are some details:
Elm Street Transitional Housing Project:
- Conversion of the Elm Street Motel into up to 30 transitional housing beds
- The building will be purchased by a non-profit housing developer, rehabilitated with County homelessness funds, and operated by a non-profit service provider
- Clients would be those experiencing homelessness, those who recently lost housing due to fires, homeless veterans, or transitioning out of jail
- Those clients are currently being housed in hotel rooms around town
- The site would be fenced with controlled access and no visitors
- The site will be alcohol and drug free
- Only those stable and receiving treatment will be considered
Talking points:
- These are our neighbors who are already in our community
- They are currently housed in hotel rooms with little supervision
- Having a project will allow for better treatment
- The non-profit operator has many years of successful projects, many in rural California
- The project will be designed to have tight controls that will minimize any potential impacts to the surrounding community
- Only those who are ready to move on to a better life will be eligible
