Spotlight On: Inimitably You

As part of our ongoing series, we are interviewing people of interest in the area who are having a positive impact on our community.

This time, we reached out to Inimitably You!

What inspired you to start Inimitably You?

The inspiration for Inimitably You really came from a deep desire to celebrate what makes each of us unique. In a world that often pushes conformity, we wanted to create something tangible that serves as a little reminder for people to embrace and showcase their own special spark. That’s where the idea for handcrafted jewelry came in – what better way to highlight individuality than with something beautiful and wearable that feels personal? The name ‘Inimitably You’ itself is central to our mission; it’s a direct reflection of wanting everyone to feel truly seen and valued for the unique, irreplaceable person they are.

Beyond the individual pieces, though, there was also a strong pull towards connection and community. We’re passionate about using art not just for expression, but as a way to spread positivity and forge genuine bonds. Building a space where like-minded, creative souls can come together, feel welcomed, and share authentically – that’s always been a huge part of the dream. It’s about more than just jewelry; it’s about fostering a community centered around acceptance and celebrating everyone’s inimitable nature.

Can you describe the journey from idea to launch in August 2024, and how did growing up in Bishop influence the process?

The journey to launching Inimitably You really started from the heart! It began quite simply as a passion project – I absolutely loved making unique jewelry pieces for my spouse and our loved ones. It quickly grew beyond just gift-giving; I found myself spending nights dreaming up new patterns and bead combinations, completely captivated by the creative process. Seeing this creative fire, my spouse provided that crucial nudge, saying, ‘Let’s do this, let’s build a business from this!’ That belief was everything. To test the waters, as a first step, I nervously took some creations around to a few local businesses after work one week. Getting that first positive response and making our initial $120 was incredibly validating – it truly felt like, ‘Okay, we can actually do this!’ That small success lit a fire under both of us. Seeing the positive response, my spouse immediately jumped into action, proactively sending out emails and texts, networking to find opportunities where we could share our creations face-to-face with the community.

This outreach quickly paid off! Through connecting with local organizers, we landed a spot at the last holiday market of the season in November. That first market was just the beginning; it created this amazing snowball effect. Suddenly, we were participating in event after event – managing to do five shows between November and January! It was a whirlwind of balancing our day jobs with late nights of creating inventory and early market mornings, but the energy was incredible. We learned so much, refining our setup and connecting with so many wonderful people. Importantly, growing up in Bishop profoundly shaped this whole process. Inspiring us to make giving back a core part of our presence from the start. At each market, we loved incorporating interactive elements like giveaways, raffles, and activities, finding small ways to spread positivity and connect with the community that was showing us so much support. It truly felt like we were building something special, together.

Seeing the community come alive for events like Mule Days or gatherings at the park, fairgrounds, and the Paiute Cultural Center showed us firsthand how accessible it is to create something positive and contribute back. More than that, Bishop instilled in us a deep appreciation for authenticity and looking beyond the conventional – it reinforced our belief that being uniquely yourself is powerful, which is the core message behind ‘Inimitably You’.

Can you walk us through how one of your pieces is made—from start to finish?

Let’s walk through creating one of our wire-wrapped rings, as it really shows the hands-on detail involved. It all begins with selecting the wire – often copper or silver – and then the magic starts. We carefully hand-braid or weave the wire strands together into a unique pattern, ensuring no two rings start exactly alike. Once the pattern is established, we gently shape this braided section around a ring mandrel, coaxing it into the perfect size for the wearer.

Then comes the really neat part where the ring structure also becomes the setting for the stone. We take the ends of the wire braid and skillfully secure them together, often using a slightly thicker gauge wire for stability. Those wire endings aren’t just trimmed away; we carefully separate them, cut them precisely, and bend them to form tiny prongs. After selecting the perfect gemstone or maybe even a little diamond, we meticulously set it within these handcrafted prongs, making sure it’s snug and secure. Sometimes, for added peace of mind and durability, we’ll apply just a tiny, non-toxic touch of jewelry epoxy to the prong tips before placing the stone. Seeing each little treasure come fully to life is incredibly rewarding.

And honestly, that level of intricate work and mindful attention isn’t just reserved for the rings – it’s the heart and soul we pour into every single piece we create. Whether we’re designing a delicate necklace, assembling a unique bracelet, crafting earrings, shaping bangles or anklets, or bringing a special custom order to life, that same dedication to craftsmanship and celebrating individuality is woven into everything ensuring each piece gets that personal, ‘Inimitably You’ touch.’

Have you had any memorable customer interactions or stories you’d like to share?

There have been so many incredibly special moments on this journey already. Our very first vendor market stands out vividly – the Holiday Market at the Tri County Fairgrounds. We really have to thank Lynn, the event organizer, who took a chance on us as a brand new, budding business. That opportunity was huge, and the energy of the event was amazing! It was there we experienced the magic of our first custom order. That interaction immediately sparked something special. It felt like that one happy customer rippled outwards, and suddenly, through word-of-mouth right there at the market, more people were approaching us for their own custom ideas. It was such a powerful affirmation that we were on the right track, connecting with people in a meaningful way. Helping bring a customer’s vision to life, especially seeing the absolute light on their face when they saw the finished piece – in that case, an incredibly happy child – was profoundly fulfilling. It showed us the real heart of why we do this: connecting with people and creating something uniquely meaningful for them.

That feeling has only deepened with other projects, particularly when we had the honor of creating custom wedding rings. Being entrusted with crafting symbols of someone’s forever commitment was such a deeply rewarding, almost dream-like experience. It reinforced our love for collaborative creation, which is why we now happily offer consultation slots for anyone interested in a custom piece, whether it’s a promise or engagement ring, a special birthstone design, or something unique for another occasion. But truly, all these memorable interactions and milestones culminate in immense gratitude for the incredible community around us. We absolutely have to thank our parents first and foremost for their unwavering belief, and our amazing friends and family who’ve supported us endlessly. And the broader community here has been phenomenal – people like Gina Symons who championed us from the very beginning, and Dani Guthrie, whose work as an event runner and community coordinator for major local events like the Wild Together Markets and the Rambling Peaks Festival has provided us with opportunity after opportunity to connect and grow. We are just so thankful for the support system that surrounds Inimitably You.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start their own business?

If we could offer one piece of advice to someone dreaming of starting their own business, it’s truly this: just start. Seriously, don’t let the fear of judgment or the need for everything to be ‘perfect’ hold you back. Some people might not get it, and that’s okay – focus on the ones who do, the ones who support you. They’ll become your people, your community. So often, we hear friends have  great ideas, but then say, ‘I don’t know how to do X,’ or ‘I wouldn’t know the next step.’ Guess what? Nobody knows all the steps when they begin. The magic happens when you don’t let that stop you, when you ask the questions, try things out, and learn – sometimes by failing! There’s a powerful saying that ‘the best things in life are on the other side of fear,’ and taking that first leap is stepping onto that path.

Our own journey with Inimitably You is a testament to that. We started with a passion and had zero experience running a physical business or navigating vendor events. We had to figure out how to translate our dream into a real experience for customers, learning logistics on the fly in a really short time. It was challenging, but embracing that learning curve is part of the adventure, and now we navigate market season feeling confident and excited for what’s next. That’s why we say enjoy the whole journey. Be driven by your passion, because when you create something authentic that you truly love, that energy resonates. It attracts the right people and opportunities, often in ways you can’t predict. Stay true to yourself, put your unique vision out there even when it’s scary, and trust the process. We truly hope that if you have a dream, big or small, you feel inspired to take that brave first step – you might just surprise yourself.

A special thank you to Inimitably You for answering our questions.
