Snow Still Melting But Summer Is Coming

It may have been a slow start to fishing season this year, but as warmer weather has descended upon the region, things have melted out quickly. Most local waters are fully open to the fishing public. The Mammoth Lakes Basin remains closed to vehicle traffic, but the Town of Mammoth Lakes is expected to begin plowing the road on Monday, June 19. Please stay out of the way of town crews trying to clear the roads and clean up over the next few weeks. Campground closures in this area have been extended through July 6.

The major factor to consider when planning your trip this year is swift-moving water. Due to the huge snowfall we received this past winter, lakes and streams are running higher and faster than normal. Please remember that swift-moving water is a safety hazard.

To give you an idea of just how much water we are talking about, it is expected that 326 billion gallons of water will flow from the High Sierra by the season’s end. Please keep a safe distance from fast-moving water and do not attempt to bypass closures to access areas that have been blocked for your safety. Additionally, please keep an extra close eye on children and pets near fast-moving water.

It is still a good idea to reach out directly to the location you are hoping to fish to confirm that they plan to be open when you arrive. Please continue to be patient, considerate and kind when visiting the area, as we are all navigating the changes this fishing season.

See you here soon!
