Is Bishop Rite Aid Closing?!
As happens in small towns, rumors can swirl and things don’t always turn out like you expected. We recently heard something about Rite Aid shutting down over a hundred and fifty stores nationwide, but when we looked on the list, our little location was not to be found.
However, after hearing an unverified report that the Bishop location would indeed be closing, we decided to head down there and see exactly what we could find.
What we found were empty shelves, boxed up toy and alcohol sections (among others), and a general solemn mood among staff members. One such employee informed us that an email went out this morning telling the entire staff that the store would close in two weeks. We were able to talk to several other employees, who did not want to go on record, but who each confirmed that the store would be shutting its doors soon.
That’s right, it seems that our local Rite Aid is closing down. We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

I spoke with a guy from corporate when I went looking for an OTC product last week. He was trying to blame the closure on shoplifting.
Not buying that, Corporate Dude.
Things started to take a turn when the management was telling customers that Rite Aid was going to become Walgreens. They seemed to be letting inventory downslide during that time- maybe to avoid having to redo everything once the merger happened? Who knows. Then just like the 7-11 / Speedway merger that didn’t happen for us, the Walgreens deal went through without our Rite Aid being included but they just didn’t bother to restock. Then when Kmart left, they had a prime opportunity to pick up the slack but they did not and in fact, let the shelves empty even more. The store has looked like it was going out of business ever since then. They had a chance to turn it around but just didn’t. Who’s to blame for that? Corporation or Management? You can’t sell what you don’t have. We really didn’t need rows and rows of alcohol, we needed rows and rows of school supplies, household items, small appliances, essential clothing like they had before, etc. Things that a small town without any other source of merchandise would need to avoid having to drive out of town or wait on mail order. As less was available, less people bothered to shop there. Will we miss what was already gone???? I do hear that the kids will miss the candy selection but that’s about it. They have never been known for their “friendly” staff and everyone always looked like they were in misery working there. But I do remember lines at every register and store full of shoppers. The last time I shopped there, the cashier was rude beyond measure when I had an issue with the card reader machine. All a memory now. Wonder if Vons will swoop in now and hold that property hostage like all the other properties making us look like a ghost town.
The RITE AID store is closing on Nov 13th. Starting Nov 1st everything is 50-75% off. A good grocer like Trader Joe’s will be a great fit for Bishop Plaza which is the largest multi tenant shopping center in all of Inyo County
Bishop Plaza retailers include BIG 5, AUTOZONE, DOMINOS, SUBWAY, PALS, SMOKE4LESS, GREAT BASIN BAKERY, GOJIRA SUSHI, SALSA’s, LAS CORAS, VIBRAS, FED UP, EL DORADO BOOTS, TESLA SUPERCHARGERS.
The store is the worst Rite Aid ever! We are so happy you are closing down! I must say 15-20 years ago that store was awesome. We have been let down for years now! Thank you for coming here to Bishop and seeing for yourselves!!
I’m surprised Rite Aid lasted as long as it did! It was the worst store/pharmacy to go to with the worst customer service!!
That place has always been the last one to shop for me. Sorry for the employees, but service there has always sucked!
Not surprisde to hear this news
That store has sucked for yrs
Just sucks for our small town..
Another one bites the dust
Since the Pandemic I’ve noticed a definite change in house with staff and those that show up, and Management has not been on top of their all around store policy all along the store items have disappeared slowly and not being replaced and this has been over about 4 or 5 years. The location is not a good fit for the community, as a lot of businesses have come and gone from there.
