New Instrument Approach Improves Reliability and Safety at Mammoth Yosemite Airport

mammoth lakes

Mammoth Yosemite Airport is now better equipped to serve residents, visitors, and the local economy with a new instrument approach procedure that significantly enhances the airport’s operational reliability during poor weather conditions. The new procedure allows aircraft to arrive safely when cloud ceilings are as low as approximately 500 feet above airport elevation or when forward visibility is reduced to one mile. Historically, these were limited to 1,300 feet and less than three miles, respectively. In addition, the approach aligns aircraft directly with the runway centerline, rather than the previous offset alignment, further improving safety for flight crews and passengers. The Town of Mammoth Lakes implemented this new technology in partnership with its airport management consultants, Aviation Insights, QED Airport & Aviation Consultants, and Flightpath Economics, as well as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This operational enhancement required no capital investment or funding from the Town. The procedure relies on precise, satellite-based global positioning technology that continuously updates aircraft avionics, making it both efficient and cost-effective. While not everyone in the community travels by air, the benefits of a more reliable and safer airport extend well beyond passengers. Improved air access strengthens the local economy by supporting tourism, enhancing medical transfer capabilities, increasing predictability for businesses, creating employment opportunities, supporting the growth of General Aviation and reinforcing Mammoth Lakes’ reputation as a year-round destination that is accessible even when weather conditions are less than ideal.address to any organization without your explicit permission.
