Fish Stocking Update

California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW) Fish Stocking

You may have seen the news about a recent power outage at CDFW’s Fish Springs Hatchery, which impacted fish production in the Eastern Sierra. While this is unfortunate, we’ve confirmed with CDFW that the impact on Mono County will be minimal.

Fish Springs primarily stocks Inyo County and the Mono Basin. Thanks to overproduction at Black Rock Hatchery—which serves the Bridgeport area— the Mono Basin (Lee Vining Creek, Lundy Lake, etc.) will continue to be stocked. Some smaller creeks may see a slight reduction, but there’s a silver lining: fewer fish in the hatcheries means less competition for food, resulting in larger-than-usual trout being stocked. Also, please note that stocking may be slightly delayed by a few days.

Mono County’s Fish Stocking Program

Mono County’s own trout stocking program is well underway. Most waters have already received two loads, and others are scheduled to get their second load by late June or early July. This season, we’ve stocked a mix of 3–5+ lbs. trophy trout and our usual 1–3+ lbs. fish to give anglers a memorable fishing experience.

Mono County has proposed increasing its fish stocking budget from $100,000 to $110,000 next year to help offset rising costs and maintain this valued program. The increase is included in the upcoming budget, which is pending Board approval, and we’re grateful for the Board’s continued support of this important effort.

As always, we welcome your feedback and appreciate your partnership in supporting our fisheries and anglers.
