Mammoth Lakes Tourism Launches “Certified Unreal” Campaign Showcasing the Region’s Geological Landmarks

Mammoth Lakes, CA —May 20, 2026— Mammoth Lakes Tourism has launched Certified Unreal a new campaign under The Real Unreal brand, highlighting the region’s most visually striking and geologically significant landscapes through an interactive map and storytelling-driven exploration of the region’s natural wonders.

The campaign introduces Mammoth Lakes as a destination defined by landscapes that feel almost impossible, yet entirely real. Positioned as a place “too real to be replicated,” Certified Unreal invites visitors to experience one of North America’s most geologically dynamic environments through science-led storytelling and immersive exploration. From volcanic craters and geothermal streams to glacially carved lakes and rare rock formations, Certified Unreal verifies the region as one of North America’s most active and visually surreal geological landscapes.

At the center of the campaign is an interactive 3D map that allows users to explore Mammoth Lakes and its surrounding geological landmarks through a series of “Certified: Unreal” case files. Each featured location includes detailed information on its formation, age, and unique characteristics, paired with immersive visuals and a blend of playful authority and scientific credibility developed in collaboration with local partners and geologists specializing in local expertise.

Spanning 17 key sites, the campaign highlights landmarks such as Devils Postpile National Monument, Hot Creek Geological Site, Mono Lake, Mammoth Mountain, and the Inyo Craters. Together, these locations tell the story of a landscape shaped by volcanic activity, glaciation, and tectonic forces, many of which remain active today. The campaign encourages visitors to look beyond the expected and discover forces that continue to shape Mammoth Lakes in real time.

Beyond exploration, Certified Unreal emphasizes stewardship and responsible travel. The campaign encourages visitors to engage with these landscapes thoughtfully, respecting both their cultural significance and ecological sensitivity while recognizing the region’s deep cultural connections and its place within Payahuunadü — “The Place Where Water Flows.” Each featured site includes visitor guidance related to access, amenities, seasonality, and best practices for responsible recreation.

Key Highlights Include:

  • An interactive 3D map featuring Mammoth Lakes’ most notable natural landmarks
  • “Certified” case files detailing the formation, trademarks, and history of each site
  • A campaign narrative that blends science, storytelling, and visual exploration
  • A focus on stewardship and responsible visitation across fragile natural environments
  • Seventeen featured geological sites shaped by volcanic, glacial, and hydrothermal activity

Sarah Winters, Vice President of Marketing says, “Certified Unreal is about giving visitors a new way to understand what makes Mammoth Lakes so extraordinary. These landscapes are not just beautiful; they are evidence of powerful natural forces still shaping this place today. By telling that story through science, creativity, and a sense of wonder, this campaign invites people to explore with curiosity, respect, and a deeper appreciation for the geology, culture, and stewardship that define our region.”

The campaign will be supported through digital storytelling, social media content, video assets, paid media, and an interactive platform designed to inspire trip planning and deeper engagement with the region focusing visitation on midweek and non-peak times.
