Beyond the Beyond: The Falkville Metal Man — An Alabama Mystery
A sheriff’s car drives slowly along an Alabama dirt road. The headlights cut through the darkness as Jeff Greenshaw of Falkville makes his normal evening rounds. His window is cracked, and in the forest on either side of the road, everything seems completely silent. Then he sees something ahead in the dark. Something silver. Something shining. And what he was about to encounter next would change his life forever.
At first, Jeff thought it was a trick of the headlights. Maybe someone had broken down up the road. Moonlight reflecting off a mailbox, but it was a place a mailbox shouldn’t have been. Then, slowing his car, he sees that whatever it is, it resembles a human being. It’s upright and walking away from him.
It turns, and he can see that its skin appears to be metal. It doesn’t look like a suit, but rather a smooth, shining surface that wraps its entire body. As it turns toward him, the reflection of his headlights shines back. The being stands there. Watching. Without thinking, Jeff’s camera is in his hand. He snaps photos of the thing, the flash turning the inside of his police car white for a moment.
And then the metal man begins walking toward the car.
Not fast, but slow, plodding steps — and it’s so silent that Jeff can hear the gravel of the dirt road crunching beneath its feet. He throws the car into reverse, letting out a scream as he does. The tires spit dirt and dust as he spins the wheel, turning the car around. The figure makes no move to follow, only standing there, reflecting the fading red of the taillights on its surface until it disappears back into the black.
Jeff told his story, and people mocked him. He turned the pictures in to the police. They looked at him like he was crazy but couldn’t explain them away. Some thought it was teenagers playing a prank, but no suit was ever found, and no confession was ever made. Jeff’s story never wavered. He never tried to profit from the photos and never appeared on any lecture circuit to tell his tale. He did, however, refuse to ever drive that road again.
But sometimes, even to this day, people traveling that stretch of dirt road swear they saw something — a strange reflection up ahead in the darkness. Something metal, moving toward the tree line.
And decades later, with no explanation and no answers, the Falkville Metal Man remains one of Alabama’s most unsettling mysteries.
