Mammoth Lakes PD Bear Beat: October 11-30, 2022


10/14, 12:23 a.m., Behind Vons – Shopper can’t get to her car because there is a bear walking around. Requested an officer to drive by to scare it off.

10/14, 2:35 p.m., Lake Mary Road – Caller arrived at cabin, and reported “it was destroyed by the bears”. Online report completed.

10/15, 5:46 p.m., Lakes Basin – Bear stuck in unoccupied cabin. Bear hazed away by MLPD.

10/17, 12:36 a.m., Lake Mary Road – Bear thinking about that grease bin. Ran off when he saw the cops.

10/18, 3:20 a.m., Lupin Street – Bear in neighbor’s trash can. Bear ran off and trash was picked up.

10/20, 6:58 p.m., Old Mammoth Road – Momma bear and cub won’t leave the property. Bear growled at the caller. Gone on arrival. Never approach a mother and cub.

10/21, 7:15 a.m., Callahan Way – Bear in a car. The doors were opened, and it eventually left.

10/21, 9:13 p.m., Union Bank – Cub stuck in trash can and mom trying to get it out. Cub made it out.

10/22, 4:38 a.m., Sawmill Cutoff – Subject called 9-1-1 whispering that she needs help. There is a bear lying next to her tent. Bear was gone on arrival.

10/22, 11:24 p.m., Vons – Bear in parking lot. Encouraged to leave by MLPD.

10/23, 11:45 p.m., Old Mammoth Road – Momma bear and cub broke into unoccupied house. Peanut butter and cheerios everywhere. Hiding in the woods when MLPD arrived. One non-lethal round deployed.

10/25, 8:16 p.m., Minaret Road – Bear inside the Mammoth Mountain garage, someone left a door open. Bear was encouraged to leave by MLPD.

10/26, 9:55 a.m., Twin Lakes – Bear tried to break into cabin causing damage. Bear gone on arrival.

10/29, 9:45 p.m., The Trails – A bear was attempting to break into a homeowner’s garage. The homeowner came outside believing it was a burglary. The bear began to approach, and the homeowner fired a 9mm round towards the ground to scare the bear off.

10/29, 9:57 p.m., Old Mammoth Road – Locals illegally using a construction trash bin as their personal dumpster, thus attracting bears resulting in a cub getting struck and killed by a car.

10/30, 9:20 p.m., Meadow Lane – Three bears were in an unlocked dumpster. Bears were hazed away, and the dumpster was secured by MLPD.
