Sierra Region Delegation Calls for Restoration of Federal Forest Service Funding
On Friday, April 18, 2025, elected officials and agency leaders from across the Sierra region, including representatives from the Town of Truckee, Nevada City, Grass Valley, Town of Mammoth Lakes, and multiple special districts, met with Congressman Kevin Kiley in Rocklin to advocate for the reinstatement of federal funding for forest health and wildfire mitigation efforts. The delegation raised urgent concerns about recent freezes on federal spending and staffing reductions affecting U.S. Forest Service operations. These cuts are significantly hindering fuels reduction programs, campground staffing, and wildfire preparedness, placing communities and public lands at an elevated and unwarranted risk.
In a demonstration of regional unity, the delegation presented Congressman Kiley with two jointly endorsed resolution packages. While the broader social and economic consequences of federal budget cuts were acknowledged in the materials, the conversation with Congressman Kiley centered primarily on wildfire prevention and forest health.

Inyo National Forest Commence Spring and Summer Prescribed Burns
Inyo National Forest fire personnel along with supporting resources will be shifting from winter pile burning to broadcast burning operations. These planned ignitions will improve forest health and reduce hazardous fuel loading across the Forest and will only be conducted when the required weather conditions and staffing exist. Along the Highway 395 corridor, between Mammoth Lakes and June Lake, up to 2,193 acres of Jeffrey pine forest will be treated to help reduce potential for wildfires from vehicle ignitions. Priority areas for treatment are located at the immediate buffer zone along Highway 395, so smoke and flames may be visible from the highway and communities in between. A full lane closure of Highway 395 will be in effect, but the highway will remain open unless smoke hampers visibility. Smoke impacts will be minimized as much as possible in coordination with the Great Basin Unified Air Pollution Control District and National Weather Service meteorologists to ensure desired weather patterns and smoke dispersal are in place in order to minimize impacts to communities, highways, and adjacent residences.
