Town Council Meeting Action Items – January 3

  • Town Council approved an agreement between the Town of Mammoth Lakes and Mammoth Lakes Housing (MLH) providing $2.2 Million in funding for the Access Apartment Project.
  • Town Council adopted an update to Chapter 8.15 of the Town of Mammoth Lakes Municipal Code to prohibit single-use plastic water bottles of 500ml or less at Town-affiliated events, including events that require a special event permit, effective January 1, 2025, and will prohibit any business from selling or distributing single-use plastic water bottles of 500ml or less within the Town of Mammoth Lakes, effective January 1, 2026. The Ordinance shall become effective and enforceable thirty (30) days from January 3, 2024.
  • Town Council adopted an update to Municipal Code Chapter 10.24 regarding vehicles on Trails (e-bikes, bikes and other related transportation devices).
  • Town Council authorized the Mayor to a sign letter of support for Whitebark’ s Grant Request to the CalFire Forest Health Program.

Town of Mammoth Lakes Introduces New Chief of Police

  • At the January 3, 2024, Town Council meeting, Dan Casabian was introduced as the new Chief of Police for the Town of Mammoth Lakes.
  • Chief Casabian has been serving as Acting, and then Interim Chief since January 2023, and on December 25, 2023, was officially appointed as the new Chief of Police by Town Manager, Daniel C. Holler.
  • Chief Casabian’s journey in law enforcement began nearly three decades ago in 1996 when he joined the United States Air Force. In 2001, he joined the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office and then accepted a position in 2002 as a Police Officer with the Mammoth Lakes Police Department. He worked a number of special assignments including Honor Guard, K9 Officer, and Detective. In 2013, he accepted a position with the Mono County Sheriff’s Office and worked as a Deputy for about 6 years. In 2018, Chief Casabian returned to the Department as a Sergeant, becoming an integral member of the Management Team.

Community Funding Applications Open January 8

  • The community of Mammoth Lakes has several funding opportunities for local organizations to help grow a youth sports program, host a special event, or provide diverse and enhanced arts, culture or recreation programs for residents and visitors of Mammoth Lakes.
  • On Monday, January 8, Special Event funding (MLT), Youth Sports funding (TOML), and Measure U – Recreation, Arts and Culture funding (MLR) will open for eligible organizations and entities.

Park and Recreation News! 

  • LA Kings Ice at Mammoth Lakes operating within the Community Recreation Center (CRC) has scheduled public skate sessions every day for the entire holiday season. Visit LA Kings Ice for the current ice schedule.
  • LA Kings Development Camp: LA Kings Alumnus Derek Armstrong and LA Kings Scout and Inclusion Specialist Blake Bolden along with the LA Kings Hockey Development Team are hosting a development camp for youth and an adult clinic at LA Kings Ice at Mammoth Lakes from January 26-28, 2024 – register online!
  • Adult Winter Programs are NOW on sale. Register for adult indoor soccer, adult indoor volleyball and hockey!

Be Snowsmart This Winter!

  • NWS Reno has posted a Winter Storm Warning from 10am Saturday, Jan. 6 to 10am on Sunday, Jan. 7. The forecast is for 2 to 6 inches of snow for Eastern Sierra communities along Highway 395 with 8 to 16 inches above 7,000 feet, including Mammoth Lakes. Winds are forecast to gust up to 50 mph in the lower elevations with 80 to 100 mph over sierra ridges.

  • The Mammoth Lakes Police Department is reminding citizens and visitors that from November 1 through April 30, no parking is allowed along all town streets unless otherwise noted.
