Local artist paints mural at visitor center in Lone Pine
A stunning new view depicting the beauty of the region has been completed
Lone Pine, Calif., June 11, 2024— Inyo National Forest, Eastern Sierra Interpretive Association (ESIA) and their partners are announcing a new 450-square-foot mural at the Eastern Sierra Visitor Center featuring the iconic landscapes, plants and animals of the region. This stunning mural is painted by local artist Jessie Sheldon, whose work revolves around wilderness and environmental communication.
“This is an opportunity to promote a public art project that showcases ecosystems from the low desert to the alpine in one of the most popular visitor centers in the Eastern Sierra,” said Calder Reid, Recreation Officer for Mount Whitney Ranger District.
Painted mostly at night, the mural took a month and a half to complete.
“This design is inspired by the epic breadth of landscapes and ecosystems within reach of the Owens Valley, from the towering granite walls of Mt. Whitney to the dunes and deserts of Death Valley,” said Jessie Sheldon, local artist and painter of the mural.
“I hope this mural leaves viewers with a sense of wonder, reverence, and connection to this special place.”
The Eastern Sierra Visitor Center is located at South Main Street (Highway 395) and State Route 136, in Lone Pine, California. Open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., there is a bookstore operated by partner organization ESIA, and knowledgeable staff from both the U.S. Forest Service and the National Park Service to assist you with your next adventure.
