In Memoriam: Joann Poncho
Joann Poncho, 86 passed away surrounded by loved ones on January 14, 2023, at Northern Inyo Hospital in Bishop, Ca. Joann was a devout Christian and a proud Bishop Paiute Tribal Member. She enjoyed traveling, reading and spending time with her family. Joann was born in Bishop on October 20, 1936, to David Shaw and Elizabeth (Butcher) Shaw. Joann met her late husband Clyde Poncho of Lone Pine, married in September 1959 and settled in Bishop, CA and had four children: Paula, Tracy Frank and Susan. Joann retired from Inyo County Child Protective Services after working 30 years. Joann also served on the Bishop Indian Tribal Council. In addition to her parents, Joann is preceded in death by her beloved husband Clyde Poncho, son Frank Poncho, brothers Leonard and Robert Shaw, and sisters Janet Shaw and Marian Red Owl. Joann is survived by her daughters; Paula Poncho of Eagle River, Alaska; Tracy Gallardo and Susan Mann of Bishop, CA; eight grandchildren: Bruce, Brian, Elizabeth and Ty
Poncho, Miranda and Darrell Jr. Maddox, Chelsey Gallardo and Yvonna Chandler; seven great-grandchildren: Frank, Aspen, Raymond, River, Blaze and Rowan Poncho, and Ivy Montoya; Three sisters: Rosalie Dondero, Janice Mitchell both of Bishop, CA, Margarette Hudson of San Francisco, CA and many nieces and nephews. A traditional Crydance will be held at the Poncho residence at 840 N. Tu Su Lane on Friday, January 27th at dusk. Memorial service will be held 11a.m. Saturday, January 28 at the Barlow
Lane Gym in Bishop, Ca. Burial will be at the Sunland Indian Cemetery followed by a reception at the Barlow Lane Gym.
