Plan A Trip To Bishop Now!

Some people swear this is the best time of year to visit the Eastern Sierra. Summer is almost over and it’s not quite autumn just yet – some refer to this as the “shoulder” season. We don’t know exactly what that means, but here is what we do know about Bishop right now….

Festivals & Other Fun Events….

Enjoy four full days of family fun at the Eastern Sierra Tri-County Fair this Labor Day Weekend. There will be carnival rides & games, live music, rodeo, demolition derby, homemade & homegrown exhibits, plus great food & vendors. Tip: Bishop Lions Club sells the best corndog ever!

Millpond Music Festival is a feast for the senses! The majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains provide the backdrop for a stage that hosts an eclectic mix of world music. It’s not overcrowded, but there are plenty of fun folks to make it a festive weekend. Tip: check out the website now to sample some of the awesome music!

All drums, dancers and spectators are welcome at the Pabanamanina Pow Wow. A pow wow is a gathering, a place where Indigenous Peoples from all tribal backgrounds come to celebrate their cultures and time-honored traditions. Tip: be sure to visit the Owens Valley Paiute-Shoshone Cultural Center.

The new Round Valley Round-Up is sure to be a hit! Many visitors and residents alike have expressed interest in eating locally raised beef and learning more about the cattle ranching industry in our region. This one night only experience will deliver a true farm-to-table dining experience ON THE RANCH! VIPs will get a guided tour and souvenir. Tip: Event is likely to sell out, get tickets early.

The Fall Colors Car Show is set for the first weekend in October. 100’s of classic autos will show and shine in the beautiful downtown Bishop City Park. Tip: Be sure to sign up for the Poker Run – it’s a “fun”draiser for the Bishop High School Booster Club!

Trout Fishing….

Fall in Bishop Creek Canyon is a hidden gem for trout fishing enthusiasts. With the summer vacationers gone and the kids back in school, the tranquility of fall creates an ideal environment for serious anglers. Mild days and crisp evenings make for a comfortable fishing experience. The fall weather not only provides a pleasant climate for anglers but also affects fish behavior, often leading to more active feeding.

With the summer rush over, the fall season sees a significant drop in the number of visitors. This means less competition for prime fishing spots and a more serene environment to enjoy the sport. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s continued stocking of various lakes and ponds throughout October ensures that the fish population remains robust. There are additional co-op plantings of Rainbow Trout from Desert Springs Trout Farm and Wright’s Rainbows. With more fish available and fewer anglers around, each cast has a higher chance of success.

Tip #1: Call ahead to rent a boat at Lake Sabrina or South Lake.

Tip#2: Bookmark this page for weekly fish reports.

Many road maintenance projects happen this time of year – there is a big one coming up between Bridgeport and Sonora Junction. It will provide much needed wildlife crossings and there will be a detour available.

Always check CalTrans Quickmap and pack some snacks in case you have to wait while the road crews make sure our roads stay in tip top shape!
