Ash Meadows NWR
Recognized as a “Wetland of Distinction”
Ash Meadows NWR has been recognized as a “Wetland of Distinction” by the Society of Wetland Scientists, highlighting its exceptional ecological value. This honor means the refuge meets all five main criteria for the designation, including being an internationally significant Ramsar Site, protecting rare wetland types, and supporting a wide variety of plants and animals—even some dating back to the Pleistocene era! With its unique habitats like forested wetlands, saline seeps, and deep blue springs, Ash Meadows NWR provides essential environments for many rare and endemic species. This recognition showcases the vital role Ash Meadows plays in preserving unique wetland ecosystems and celebrates the collaborative efforts dedicated to its conservation.
