Truck Hauling Chickpeas Catches Fire

On November 21, a tractor-trailer transporting 44,000 pounds of dried chickpeas caught fire in Death Valley National Park. Superintendent Mike Reynolds expressed concern about potential environmental impacts but noted that stray chickpeas are unlikely to become invasive in such an arid environment. The incident occurred after the truck’s brakes overheated while descending Daylight Pass and Mud Canyon Road, areas closed to commercial truck traffic. The driver stopped on CA-190. The National Park Service, Caltrans, and the California Highway Patrol responded around 5:30 am. Two Star Towing later removed the wreckage and cleaned up the spilled chickpeas.
Seismic Waves Reach Devils Hole

On December 5, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake off Northern California’s coast triggered a two-foot seiche in Devils Hole, over 500 miles away. The waves disrupted the shallow spawning area of the endangered Devils Hole pupfish, potentially impacting their food supply and eggs. While these disturbances pose short-term challenges, they also clear decaying material that could harm the ecosystem. Historically, the pupfish have rebounded after similar events, with observations of increased spawning activity. Biologists are monitoring the 212-strong population and will adjust supplemental feeding and conservation efforts as needed.
