At the most recent school board meeting for Bishop unified, a huge public outcry against mask mandates was presented by the public. While Superintendent Katie Kolker,
as well as multiple health professionals, gave the facts about the county mandates and that they are in place for the children’s safety. The enraged public argued and booed. During open session they allowed each person that wanted to speak, 2 minutes on the podium. Many arguments were given, factual and otherwise, for and against children being forced to mask up in the classroom.
Josh Nicholson made the analogy that a mask is to Covid 19, like a chainlink fence is to a mosquito. Another member of the community asked, “If the board had ever smelled someone’s fart through a mask….the mask didn’t do much”.
After being interrupted repeatedly during her time at the podium nurse practitioner, Colleen McEvoy, from both NIH and the Bronco Clinic at BUHS, offered to stop talking if the crowd did not want to hear what the Public Health Dept. or the American Academy of Pediatrics, says about the science behind children wearing masks in school settings. The crowd erupted in applause…
Let’s just say the room was divided.
