Bodie Updates and Seasonal Reflections

Happy Monday,

Our region has recently been touched by a wave of monsoonal moisture. My husband and I had a lighthearted debate over the weather forecast—while I trusted my weather app, which predicted clear skies, he referred to the local newspaper’s forecast. In the end, he was right; the clouds rolled in and rain began to fall. I mention this because the scent of rain on sagebrush is one of my favorite smells, a powerful reminder of my childhood and days spent in Bodie. No matter where I am, the aroma of wet sagebrush instantly transports me back to that special place and time.

This serves as a reminder of how magical it is to experience Bodie in a thunderstorm—the remarkable fragrance in the air and the dramatic skies are unforgettable. Everyone should have the chance to witness this at least once.

As summer draws to a close, the season is winding down. With Labor Day approaching this weekend, park hours will change after the holiday; starting then, the park will close at 4pm.

I’d also like to share some exciting news with you all.

Bodie has been officially recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records as the Largest Gold Mining Ghost Town. This recognition presents a fantastic opportunity, as the Guinness publications have a global readership. We hope to offer the book featuring Bodie in our Museum and online store in the future.

In May, an update to our National Historic Landmark (NHL) designation was approved by the NHL Committee. The original designation was established in the 1960s, and since then, both the boundaries of the park and our understanding of Bodie’s history have grown. The final step in this update is a signature from the Secretary of the Interior, and we’ll share more news once it is official.

Work is ongoing for our Long-Term Stabilization Plan. Representatives from Garavaglia Architecture visited in June to gather information essential for developing this plan. Thanks to your support, we’ve been able to match State Parks’ investment in the early stages of the project; however, additional resources will be needed to see it through. We appreciate any contributions you can make toward this important effort.

These are all exciting developments, and we look forward to keeping you updated in the coming months.

Wishing you all the best as summer comes to a close,

Shannon
