Bishop Broncos Track and Field Log 16 Personal Records at Lonnie Shelton Invitational Despite Difficult Meet

The BUHS Track & Field team traveled to Bakersfield, CA on Friday, April 11th, 2025, to compete in the Lonnie Shelton Invitational, which hosted 29 schools from across the Bakersfield area. While the meet featured some great athletes and strong performances, it was unfortunately hindered by major technical issues. These delays led to a number of errors, including athletes being scratched from events without explanation. By 9:30 p.m.—nine hours after the meet began—they were still running the 300m hurdles. With a 3.5-hour drive ahead of us and other teams also choosing to leave, some of our athletes were unable to compete in their final events, including the 4x400m relay, 200m, and 3200m. One of our runners even calculated he wouldn’t be toeing the line for the 3200m until midnight!

Despite the chaos, BUHS stayed focused and delivered a fantastic showing, notching 16 personal records (PRs)!

Meet Highlights:

  • Boys 4x800m Relay (Steven Veenker, Kingston Gruwell, Caleb Fitt, Ezekiel Lundgren)
    Placed 7th with a time of 9:37.48
  • Senior Layton Rossi
8th place in Discus with a throw of 121’
  • Sophomore Dacia Clark
Tied for 4th in Girls High Jump with a mark of 4’6”

Frosh/Soph Division Standouts:

  • Freshman Hunter Dailey had a record-setting day:
    • Broke a 21-year-old Freshman Long Jump school record with a jump of 18’7” (6th place)
    • Re-broke his own Freshman Triple Jump record with 37’10” (6th place)
    • Reset his Freshman 100m record with a time of 12.10

    • Zavion follows closely at 1:02.35

  • Freshman Wyatt Miears was dominant in throws:
    • 1st in Frosh/Soph Discus with a throw of 125’ (would’ve placed 6th in Varsity!)
    • 1st in Frosh/Soph Shot Put with a throw of 44’8.5”, which is currently the 5th farthest shot put throw in California this season and would’ve earned a top 3 Varsity finish

A Funny Moment:

In Bakersfield, Frosh/Soph boys are supposed to throw a 10 lb shot put. However, due to a lack of communication before the meet and no instruction at the event, Wyatt unknowingly threw a 12 lb shot put—and still beat the field!

Next Up:

  • Cal City Meet – April 23rd
  • Carson City Invitational – April 27th

Go Broncos!
