Be Prepared for Periods of Heavy Rain, Snow, Gusty Winds and Potential Flooding This Weekend

The Town of Mammoth Lakes is notifying all residents and visitors to be prepared for a strong Atmospheric River event bringing heavy rain, snow, gusty winds and potential areas of flooding to Mammoth Lakes through Sunday, January 1, 2023.

National Weather Service Reno has issued a Winter Storm Warning, Avalanche Watch and Flood Watch for Mono County and the Town of Mammoth Lakes.

The bulk of the moisture will come in waves during a 24-30 hour period from late this morning through Saturday afternoon with continuous intense rain and high elevation snow for the Sierra and even some potential for lightning (liquid totals 3-7″ with up to 10″ near the crest).

The forecast will see the main push from the large atmospheric river arriving around 4-7pm today, with the heaviest precipitation from Saturday morning through Saturday night (12/31).  Snow levels will begin to fall mid-afternoon Saturday, with snow at all elevations between 7-10pm Saturday night.

Due to the forecasted severe weather and snow forecast, the New Years Eve Fireworks scheduled in The Village has been cancelled.

Heavy snow is expected above 7,000 feet, with snow accumulations of 6 to 18 inches possible, with 1 to 3 feet between 8,000-9,000 feet. Areas above 9,000 feet in elevation may see 4 to 6 feet. Winds gusting to 50 mph and 100 mph or more along ridgetops.
