Wye Road and U.S. 6 Roundabout Construction to Begin October 26, 2026
What you need to know: A roundabout will be installed on U.S. 6 at Wye Road, the connector between U.S. 6 and U.S. 395 in Bishop, starting Monday, October 26. There will be one-way traffic control through the two-week construction schedule.
BISHOP — Construction on the U.S. 6 Temporary Roundabout Project will commence at Wye Road in Bishop on Monday, October 26. Crews will restripe the roadway and install a single-lane Vortex modular delineator system. This intersection on U.S. 6 has an accident rate higher than the state average for a similar facility, hence the need for a roundabout.
This will be the first roundabout on a state highway in Mono, Inyo, and eastern Kern counties. The primary function of a roundabout is to decrease traffic speeds and points of conflict for both vehicles and pedestrians. There are 32 points of conflict for vehicles and 24 for pedestrians at the intersection in its current form; with the roundabout, there will be 8 points of conflict for both vehicles and pedestrians.
This traffic-calming feature reduces the number of all accidents by 35 percent and injury accidents by 76 percent. For fatality accidents, a roundabout reduces that number by 90 percent.
Construction is tentatively scheduled to finish on Monday, November 9. For more information about roundabouts, watch this video produced by our colleagues in District 2: https://youtu.be/rb9pR7lL4fA?
TRAFFIC IMPACT: Crews will perform striping and electrical work Monday through Wednesday during the day from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. After that, they’ll work overnight the rest of the way although there could be intermittent daytime work as needed. There will be one-way traffic control with a flagger, and drivers may experience 5-minute delays. When crews are not working, Wye Road and U.S. 6 will be a four-way intersection with a stop sign.
Drivers may also encounter weekend work.

Travelers are asked to be attentive to workers on the highway, slow for the cone zone, and move over whenever possible to give additional clearance. Be Safe and Be Work Zone Alert! And remember to #SlowDownInTown.
