I’ve heard chatter about Whoa Nellie Deli for as long as I can remember. Growing up on the west side of the Sierra, it was always described as this incredible spot on the east side, an unexpected culinary gem tucked inside of a gas station at the edge of Yosemite. It was known as a place where travelers stopped for fuel and ended up staying for a meal they’d never forget.

Over the years, it became something that was talked about as part road-trip lore, part local pride, and entirely unique. Finally getting the chance to sit down and hear the story behind this beloved spot feels like uncovering a piece of Sierra history.

What inspired the creation of Whoa Nellie Deli, and how did it find its home inside the Tioga Gas Mart?

Honestly, the deli was created almost by accident. We knew we wanted a small food option at the Tioga Gas Mart, but we had no restaurant experience. The original idea was something simple—sandwiches, hot dogs, that kind of thing. Then Matt Toomey came along, looking for a fresh start, and he had way bigger ideas. He started creating dishes that were way beyond what we’d imagined, and customers loved it. That’s how it all took off. We opened in 1996, and it’s stayed a family business ever since. A lot of our employees have been with us so long they feel like family, too.

Many people call Whoa Nellie Deli a “gourmet oasis” in the Eastern Sierra. What’s your philosophy behind the menu?

We just want to surprise people. Nobody expects to pull into a gas station and find restaurant-quality food, and that’s part of the fun. The idea has always been fresh, flavorful and creative dishes that reflect the spirit of the Sierra. Over time, it’s become more than just food—it’s turned into a place to gather. People hang out on the patio, swap stories, and when we have live music it’s like a reunion for many.

What dish on the menu best captures the spirit of Lee Vining and the Eastern Sierra?

The fish tacos are the most famous—they’re casual, fresh, and totally unexpected in a gas mart. But we also do things like elk chops, buffalo meatloaf and wild boar that tie into the rugged side of the Sierra.

The deli is known as a surprise stop for travelers heading to Yosemite. What’s the most memorable reaction you’ve heard from a first-time visitor?

The best is when people walk in expecting chips and soda and end up sitting down with a full meal, a glass of wine or a house special Mango Margarita. We hear a lot of “best meal of the trip” comments, which never gets old. If they happen to show up on a night with live music, that’s when the jaws really drop—it’s such an unexpected, fun vibe.

Whoa Nellie Deli has developed something of a cult following. What do you think keeps people coming back year after year?

I think it’s a mix of great food, the views, and the community feel. We’ve been family-owned since the start, and people sense that when they walk in. We put a lot of heart and hard work into the business. Many of our staff have been with us for years, so there’s warmth and familiarity. Add in the live music nights, which have really taken on a life of their own, and it’s just become a special place. People love making it a part of their Yosemite tradition—and once they’ve been, they usually want to come back.
