Independence Residents Asked to Test Internet Speeds

REST OF COUNTY ENCOURAGED TO TEST IN PREPARATION FOR FUTURE REQUESTS

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is currently evaluating grant applications for broadband  expansion projects for the State’s Federal Funding Account (FFA) program and the Federal Broadband Equity,  Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program. As part of the CPUC’s evaluation activities, the agency has reached  out to Inyo County to obtain current Internet speed test data for Independence residents.

The results of the speed test, available at https://connectedeasternsierra.net/speed/, will provide the data  needed to refute or validate claims of existing Internet service speeds.

After residents run the Internet speed test, they can effortlessly submit their test results to the Inyo-Mono Broadband Consortium, which will then share the results with CPUC to assist in its grant application evaluation.

The test will ask for an address or town and the type of device being used (cell phones can’t be tested) and will  then display the speed test data before asking the tester to submit their results by clicking the “Submit Your  Results” button. A form with additional questions will appear, allowing residents to add comments and/or contact  information if they wish. The most important piece of information needed is one’s current Internet Service  Provider.

“While our immediate need for speed test results is for Independence, we’re encouraging all residents in Inyo  County to run this test in order to have speed test data available in case the CPUC has any questions in the  near future about actual Internet service speeds in other parts of the County,” said Eastern Sierra Regional Broadband Coordinator Scott Armstrong.
