Beyond the Beyond: EBANIs – The Living UFOs of the Skies

Just when you think you’ve turned over every last stone of the UFO phenomenon, more seem to appear in front of you. This happened recently when I became made aware of a string (quite literally) of decades-long sightings, mainly in Latin America, of what appears to be flying, rope-like lights lit up in the skies above Mexico. EBANIs, an acronym for Entidades Biológicas Anómalas No Identificadas (Unidentified Anomalous Biological Entities), are a subset of UFO sightings that differ from traditional UFOs in one key way: witnesses and researchers describe them as having a living or biological nature to them, rather than a mechanical spacecraft one.
They are often seen to have snake or worm-like qualities, resembling glowing “sky serpents” with fluid, organic movements that twist and wriggle in the sky. They appear in clusters, often tied to each other and surrounded by or releasing small, circular orbs into the sky. And unlike many traditional UFO sightings, they appear mostly during the daytime.

The term EBANI was first coined by Jaime Maussán, one of the most prominent and controversial figures in the world of UFO and paranormal investigation, especially in Latin America. He’s a polarizing figure in that world, hailed by some for his journalistic efforts and criticized by others for promoting what appear to be hoaxes. Host of Tercer Milenio, or Third Millenium, he is the main figure responsible for publicizing EBANIs, repeatedly showing daytime footage on his TV show.
Around 2004, Maussán began airing segments featuring video recordings by amateur skywatchers showing what appeared to be long, flexible, glowing objects floating and moving in the skies over cities like Mexico City and Ecatepec. His reports attempted to connect the sightings with broader questions about alien life, particularly life that may exist in our upper atmosphere.
Witnesses frequently report EBANI to move in fluid, seemingly intelligent patterns, and unlike drones or balloons, they do not follow predictable flight paths, sometimes changing direction on a dime. They have been known to float or fly in the air for long periods of time, giving witnesses ample time to record and later analyze their seemingly unpredictable movements.

Some have suggested that these are alien biological or semi-biological drones, possibly observing human activity. Others have posited the idea that they are a kind of biological sky life, a sort of luminescent, aerial jellyfish-like creature that exists in our upper atmosphere. Still skeptics argue that they are misidentified plastic debris or strings of balloons, moving strangely due to high-altitude wind currents.

EBANIs represent a strange and compelling mystery existing near the fringe of the broader UFO phenomenon. Whether probes, lifeforms, or misidentified man-made objects, further examination is required to determine exactly what they are. Unlike conventional UFOs, they seem to have some qualities that would suggest that they are biological in nature, prompting speculation that life as we know it could exist in places we had never before thought possible. Whatever the case, until science takes a closer look, EBANIs will remain one of the most enigmatic mysteries drifting silently through our skies.
