MAMMOTH LAKES POLICE DEPARTMENT ENCOURAGES “OFF-ROAD ENTHUSIASTS” TO COMMENT ON THE 2022 CALIFORNIA OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLE (OHV) GRANT APPLICATION.

POLICEPHOTOweb 720x340 1Our Agency has submitted a preliminary application to the State of California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle (OHMVR) Division for the 2022 Grant Cycle. The public may view and comment on the application by visiting the State Grants and Cooperative Agreements Program website.

With the 2021 Grant Award, MLPD conducted summer and fall OHV patrols on the Polaris Razor. Officers contacted 79 OHV riders issuing warnings for speeding, not wearing helmets, and camping in illegal areas (including several with illegal campfires).  They also checked for current green sticker registration on OHV vehicles and engaged with riders for community relations and occasionally, offering directions. The MLPD OHV patrol responded to one UTV Rollover Traffic Collison and patrolled the dirt roads around Crowley Lake for 4th of July festivities.

Please read more about what the MLPD OHV Program offers the community of Mammoth Lakes in the Press Release or by viewing the full application at ohv.parks.ca.gov. The OHMVR Division’s website provides detailed instructions for accessing the preliminary application and submitting comments.

MAMMOTH LAKES POLICE DEPARTMENT ENCOURAGES “OFF-ROAD
ENTHUSIASTS” TO COMMENT ON THE 2022 CALIFORNIA OFF-HIGHWAY
VEHICLE (OHV) GRANT APPLICATION.
March 3, 2022 – The Mammoth Lakes Police Department (MLPD) invites the public
to comment on the preliminary application to the State of California Off-Highway
Motor Vehicle (OHMVR) Division for the 2022 Grant Cycle. The Department’s
application was submitted to the state on March 3rd and the public review and
comment period for the Grants and Cooperative Agreements Program begins on
March 8 and ends on May 2, 2022, at 5:00 PM.
MLPD is seeking funding to continue the Agency’s Off Highway Vehicle (OHV)
program, which was launched in 2021 with its first OHMVR Division Grant award.
The Agency has desired an OHV program for over twenty-five years and now seeks
to build upon this new program after a very successful year of patrolling in the OHV
RZR and Snowmobile. The goal of the OHV program is to provide safety and
education for both residents and visitors and to reduce intrusions into the
wilderness and other protected areas. OHV Law Enforcement protects public safety
by patrolling trails that are shared with other outdoor recreation enthusiasts.
Officers enforce speeding, driving while impaired, green sticker registration,
encroachment/trespass issues, offer accident support and more. This area has also
seen a significant increase in dispersed camping. Dispersed campers often have
illegal fires that pose a great risk of causing a wildfire in Mammoth Lakes. MLPD
continues to support our Allied Agency’s OHV programs, which are critical to the
safety and education of the public and off-road enthusiasts.
The Mammoth Lakes Police Department applied for this grant using the State of
California’s On-Line Grant Application (OLGA). After the public review and comment
period of 60 days, the final application will be submitted by June 6, 2022. The
public may view and comment by visiting the State Grants and Cooperative
Agreements Program website at ohv.parks.ca.gov. The OHMVR Division’s website
provides detailed instructions for accessing the preliminary application and
submitting comments.
