World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was established in 2006 to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to increase their awareness and understanding of abuse and neglect of older people. Each year, on June 15th, communities around our country and the world come together in support of older people. In the United States alone, up to five million older persons fall victim to abuse and neglect each year. The National Council on Aging describes it as a โ€œsilent problem that robs seniors of their dignity, security, and โ€“ in some cases โ€“ costs them their lives.โ€

Locally, Inyo County Adult Protective Services (APS) receives an average of 15 reports of suspected abuse and neglect each month. In the past year, the Inyo County Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program received 28 reports of suspected abuse and or neglect. Reports include, but are not limited to neglect/self-neglect, physical abuse, and financial abuse. Those who are reported as the abuser are often close to the senior โ€“ someone they know and trust.

We can all do our part to protect our older residents by knowing the signs of abuse and neglect, reaching out to those who can help, and by raising awareness. Inyo County Health and Human Services is asking everyone to join us Wednesday, June 15, 2022, to support our older neighbors, friends, and family, and help us raise awareness by wearing PURPLE in honor of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
