As many know, the town of Mammoth Lakes, along with Mammoth Lakes Tourism (MLT) and Mammoth Lakes Recreation (MLR), has initiated a groundbreaking community partnership with the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise the LA Kings.

Facilitated by AEG Global Partnerships, this extensive multiyear collaboration has led to the creation of “LA Kings Ice at Mammoth Lakes” – the town’s inaugural indoor Olympic-sized ice rink.

The unveiling ceremony for the rink was held within the Community Recreation Center (CRC) on Saturday, January 27, 2024, and the event was open for all to attend. It featured LA Kings President and Hall of Famer Luc Robitaille, Parks and Recreation Director Stuart Brown, Mayor Bill Sauser, and others.

John Urdi, Executive Director at Mammoth Lakes Tourism, said, “The partnership has been phenomenal for us. The crossover between hockey fans, skiers, and the folks who want to come up here in the summertime has been wonderful.” He went on to say, “I would be surprised if we did not have a high school hockey team here in the next three years.

The town manager, Daniel C. Holler, also spoke at the opening. “This really does represent a large vision that this community has had for years… going from the outdoor rink to something that is so awesomely improved.”

Following the ceremony, spectators had the opportunity to witness the ceremonial puck drop on center ice and engage in on-ice festivities presented by the LA Kings Ice Crew and Hockey Development team, including special appearances by Bailey, Woolly, and Bucky.

Throughout the evening, guests also enjoyed a selection of hot drinks, snacks, and giveaways, with Pino Pies available for purchase on the CRC deck. Additionally, complimentary ice skating sessions were scheduled from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, with rentals and skate aids offered based on availability.
