Sierra Lifeflight Offers Hiking Safety Advice

SIERRA LIFEFLIGHT OFFERS HIKING SAFETY ADVICE
(BISHOP, Calif.) — Sierra Lifeflight, a REACH Air Medical Services (REACH) brand, reminds residents and tourists of Bishop and the surrounding area to be safe when hiking this summer. Hiking is an enjoyable recreational activity and an excellent form of exercise, but it has its dangers – especially as temperatures start to climb. To help everyone safely enjoy the outdoors, Sierra Lifeflight offers these hiking tips:
Plan ahead
- Check the weather forecast
- Plan your hike route and approximate the time it will take to complete
- Avoid hiking in the dark
- Tell someone where you are going and when you plan to be back
- Avoid hiking alone; bring a hiking partner
- Bring a cellphone or a Global Positioning System (GPS) device
Stay hydrated
- Carry water, sports drinks and healthy snacks, especially if the hike lasts more than 30 minutes
- Find a shady spot to rest or cool down if you begin to feel overheated, light-headed or develop a headache
Know your abilities
- If you are unable to talk while walking, the hike may be too strenuous
Use sun protection
- Apply and reapply sunscreen regularly
- Wear protective clothing, such as a wide-brimmed hat, long pants and long sleeved shirt
Avoid wildlife
- Do not follow or approach wildlife; always observe at a distance
- Avoid venomous animals like rattlesnakes, spiders, scorpions and bees
- Never feed wildlife
