Safety Alert: Recreation Risks at Crowley Lake
As the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) continues to release above normal water flows this winter, residents and recreational enthusiasts, particularly those engaged in ice skating, are strongly advised to cease these activities on Crowley Lake until further notice.
Crowley Lake is an operational reservoir and therefore can fluctuate in water surface elevations and cause instability of ice conditions. There is a risk that there may be nothing beneath the top layer of ice, making the lake hazardous for ice skating.
“We are taking proactive measures to inform the community about the potential risks associated with the quickly changing conditions of the reservoir,” said LADWP Aqueduct Manager Adam Perez. “Safety is our top priority, and we strongly advise against ice skating on Crowley Lake.”
Inyo and Mono counties are actively working with LADWP to emphasize the need for public cooperation in spreading the word about this potential hazard. In general, the public is urged to exercise caution when doing any activity on ice, obey any posted signs, and avoid putting themselves or others at risk – especially given this winter’s unseasonably warm temperatures so far.
