Mono County Board of Supervisors Honors Departing Public Health Officer Dr. Thomas Boo
MONO COUNTY, Calif. (October 13, 2026)— On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, the Mono County Board of Supervisors officially adopted a proclamation commending Public Health Officer Dr. Thomas Boo for his exemplary public service, steadfast leadership, and deep commitment to the health and well-being of Eastern Sierra residents as he prepares to depart his role with the County.
Dr. Boo’s distinguished medical and public health career spans nearly three decades. After serving families as a local family practice physician beginning in 1996, Dr. Boo joined the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2002 as a medical officer in the Epidemic Intelligence Service. He subsequently served with the CDC Global AIDS Program in Nairobi, Kenya, and Juba, South Sudan, through 2009 before focusing his expertise back home in the Eastern Sierra.
Dr. Boo first served as Mono County Public Health Officer from 2018 to 2021, leading the region through the height of the COVID-19 pandemic with transparent communication, timely advice, and steady direction. His evidence-based guidance bolstered community trust and guided County staff and residents through an unprecedented global public health crisis.
After returning to the role of Public Health Officer in 2023, Dr. Boo drew on his extensive background to forge strong partnerships between local, state, and federal health agencies. During his tenure, he prioritized critical regional health issues, including proactive Hantavirus awareness and prevention, while advancing local health ordinances and emergency preparedness measures to ensure the County remains resilient against future public health challenges.
“Dr. Boo has left a lasting legacy of professionalism, integrity, and compassionate care across Mono County,” said Board Chair, Jennifer Kreitz (District 1). “Whether guiding our region through a global pandemic or addressing specific environmental health risks in the Eastern Sierra, his evidence-based approach and dedication to our residents have made a lasting difference. We extend our deepest gratitude for his years of service and wish him every success in the next chapter of his career.”
Following Dr. Boo’s departure, Dr. Richard Johnson, former Mono County Public Health Officer and current Alpine County Public Health Officer, will step in to serve as the County’s Interim Public Health Officer, ensuring seamless leadership and continuity of care during the transition.
The Board of Supervisors offers its sincere appreciation for Dr. Boo’s contributions to the public health and health service delivery systems throughout Mono County.
