Get ready to cast your lines! Eastern Sierra locals and visitors alike are celebrating “Fishmas,” the official start to the regular fishing season this Saturday, April 26. This highly anticipated day marks the beginning of a season filled with angling excitement across Mono County’s pristine lakes, streams, and reservoirs.
This year promises abundant opportunities – Mono County invests $100,000 to stock 18 local bodies of water with 40,000 pounds, while the Town stocks the Lakes Basin with over 18,000 pounds of rainbow trout.
Adding to this bounty, private marinas, resorts, and local fish foundations like the Twin Lakes Trout Foundation, the Bridgeport Fish Enhancement Foundation, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife also contribute to stocking efforts, ensuring a thriving fishing experience for all. Hantavirus Hotspot, Prevention is Key
Hantavirus is a serious and often fatal illness spread primarily through contact with infected deer mouse droppings, urine, or saliva. Deer mice are widespread in the Eastern Sierra region. “Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome is uncommon but extremely dangerous,” said Dr. Tom Boo, Mono County Health Officer. “We urge residents and visitors to pay attention to the presence of mice indoors and other enclosed spaces and take precautions to reduce the risk of infection, especially when cleaning up areas where rodent activity is present.” Avoid sweeping droppings and wear protective gear, even in offices and businesses. Spread the word to keep others safe. If you’ve had rodent exposure and develop flu-like symptoms, seek medical care immediately. Visit the Mono County Public Health website for additional information and download and share the Hantavirus prevention measures in English and Spanish.
