Inyo National Forest Celebrates National Public Lands Day This Saturday, September 24

BISHOP, Calif. — Join the Inyo National Forest and its partners for National Public Lands Day at the Mono Lake Ranger District, this Saturday September 24. The Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitor Center will be hosting something for everyone of all ages: from volunteer work projects to junior rangers and interpretive presentations, to hanging out with Smokey and our wildland firefighters. As a thank-you after the event, fee-free vouchers for one day use entry into any federal public land will available for participating volunteers!

This year’s theme is “Giving Back Together” and what better way than to volunteer for the forest! Meet us at the Visitor Center by 8:30 a.m. to sign up for one of the volunteer work projects:

  1. Trash removal/trail maintenance at South Tufa
  2. Landscape maintenance around the Visitor Center.
  3. Lop vegetation at Lundy Canyon Trail (please be aware: there is a one-mile hike into this project site).

Volunteers will be working from approximately 10:00 a.m. until after lunch, then meet back at the visitor center for group photos. Please wear long sleeved shirts and pants, close-toed shoes or boots, gloves if you have them, and bring water and snacks. Tools and personal protective equipment will be provided for those who do not have any. Sign up ahead of time at: Mono Basin Scenic Area Visitor Center Stewardship Day | NEEF (

For those who’d like to stay at Visitor Center, the Forest and its partners will host:
– Junior rangers
– Coloring station
– Tufa experiments
– Cross cut saw demonstrations
– Interpretive talks
– Smokey Bear and our own local engine crew!

The Forest would like to thank its partners at the Eastern Sierra Interpretive Association, the Mono Lake Tribe, Friends of the Inyo, California State Parks, Mono Lake Committee, Mono Lake Volunteer Program and the Mono County Sustainable Recreation Trail Stewards Program for making these activities possible.
