Groundbreaking Ceremony for Wanaaha Hotel

On August 16, 2024, in Bishop, CA, the Bishop Paiute Tribal Council and the Bishop Paiute  Development Corporation broke ground on a four-story, 78-room hotel. The 52,670-square-foot  facility will include a conference room, pool, jacuzzi, patio area, and coffee shop. The Wanaaha Hotel  project, with a budget of $28 million, will be one of the largest economic development initiatives in  the area.

The groundbreaking ceremony, led by Tribal Chairman Steven Orihuela, marked more than just the  beginning of construction. It symbolizes a commitment to strengthening community bonds, creating  job opportunities, and laying the foundation for future generations. Chairman Orihuela expressed  heartfelt gratitude to Tribal leadership, past and present, acknowledging key figures such as Allen  Summers Sr., Chad Delgado, Earleen Williams, Bill Vega, the late Monty Bengochia, Kris Hohag,  Gerald Howard, Brian Poncho, and many others who played crucial roles in making this project a  reality.

Bishop Paiute Tribal Vice-Chairwoman Emma Williams highlighted the project’s importance in  continuing the tribe’s legacy and driving future development. The Wanaaha Hotel project is a  significant milestone in the tribe’s efforts to enhance local tourism and offer upscale  accommodations that honor their cultural heritage.

Teri Red Owl, Chairwoman of the Bishop Paiute Development Corporation, emphasized that the  hotel project is just the beginning of transformative developments in the valley, including the  creation of essential facilities and job opportunities. The Vice President of Operations for Moorefield  Construction expressed enthusiasm for being part of the project and looks forward to its completion  in late September 2025.
